BACKGROUND INFORMATION: (pertinent items excerpted from CMC-South Board-approved document)

I.  CMC State Policy relevant to endorsements/links:

“IV. Endorsements

At this time, CMC does not approve or endorse programs. To do so, would require resources (time and energy) on the part of the board to research and determine ongoing quality and intent aligned with that of CMC’s mission that are not currently feasible. Because we do not have the resources to ensure that endorsements reflect the high quality standards for CMC, it would amount to a false service to our membership if we cannot reliably certify the consistency of the program. In contrast to the joint venture proposal above, where CMC becomes intimately involved with the program or project and can therefore testify easily to its quality, there is no such opportunity with an endorsement.

NOTE:  Acceptance of a speaker at a conference/symposium does not imply CMC endorsement of the opinions, programs, or instructional methodologies presented by that speaker.

II.  Sale of advertisement and California non-profits:

Page 48 of Publication 18 (http://boe.ca.gov/pdf/pub18.pdf) from the CA Board of Equalization appears to state that taxes are not charged for the sale of advertisement in a publication that a non profit provides its members.

III.  Basis for pricing structure

The above pricing is well below newsletter rates for California teacher unions, NCTM (http://www.nctm.org/about/content.aspx?id=23293 lists ¼ page, B & W at $410, color at $1325).

Note:  The CMC South Annual Mathematics Conference final manuscript, distributed to over 2000 members at the conference and anticipated to be run at 2500 to 3000 copies in 2012, has typically run 64 pages in length.  Up to eight (8) interior pages in the 2011 program (e.g. pp. 17, 21, 23, 31, 34, 43, 47, 51) may have been redesigned to allow for advertisements, generating up to $9600.00 in income, without increasing printing costs.    Should the number of sessions expand to fill this available space, the number of advertisements sold would have to be weighed against the increased cost of adding additional pages and increasing printing costs.

CMC South may consider mathematics education non-profit organizations such as Math for America, Park City Mathematics Institute, TODOS, etc. for reduced rates.  The amount charged such organizations does not allay the costs of additional pages and should be wisely allocated, with prior approval from the CMC South Executive Board for any such consideration.
